When I first got married, I quickly realized I had a lot to learn in the kitchen—and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher than my mother-in-law.

She was an amazing cook. The kind who didn’t follow a recipe, rarely measured a thing, and somehow always had dinner on the table exactly when it needed to be. I made a quiet decision early on: I would learn as much from her as I possibly could. (And oh, how grateful I am for that now!)

I’d often perch at the kitchen counter with a notepad and pen, trying my best to scribble down her instructions as she stirred and poured and explained. Her roots were Mennonite, so the meals she made were different than the ones I’d grown up with—but so delicious. She’d tell me the German names for the dishes as she went along, and her joy in feeding people was evident.

Today’s recipe is one I watched her make time and time again. It’s a family favorite that brings instant comfort, and every time I smell it cooking, I’m right back in her kitchen, watching her add “just a little of this” and “a sprinkle of that.”
